Annie Denison is a Colorado born artist working in the Denver area. She received her BFA from the University of Colorado Denver in 2013, and has been showing and performing her art in galleries, local businesses, and music venues for the last several years.
As a child, she worked constantly in her grandmother’s art studio, trying her hand at any medium she could find. It was this influence that started her on her artistic path and taught her how to dissect and understand the world around her.
As Robert Motherwell once said, “I almost never start with an image. I start with a painting idea, an impulse, usually derived from my own world.”
Annie’s paintings are a cumulative reaction to a string of small impetuses; each mark that is made becomes codependent on the marks that came before it, each one carefully balancing composition and contrast with calm abandon. It becomes a sort of conversation, like exploring topics with an old friend that you know well. You can almost guess their answers, but you never know exactly what they will say.
